The Kidde representative provided their part number for replacement and I ordered a 6 pack of alarms from Amazon. The alarms are AC with a battery backup and are interconnected so that when one alarm is triggered, all the alarms will sound off. The Firex plug will not plug into the new Kidde smoke alarms so it was necessary to remove the old alarm pigtail and wire in the Kidde connector to the house wiring which is a pretty simple job. Also, the mounting plate is different so one has to remove the old plate and mount the new one in order to fasten the smoke detectors to the wall or ceiling. Again, a simple job. It took approximately 20 to 30 minutes to remove and replace 6 smoke detectors. They have been installed for 5 days and it appears that the false alarm issue has been resolved and we are hopefully good for the next 10 years.This is code in our town for new construction. After 8 years, one of the detectors started going off randomly. I called the Firex support number and found out that Firex had been bought by Kidde. Kidde still makes the Firex brand, but the new Firex detectors have a different connector and are not compatible with the old Firex detectors. As a result, I had to replace all the detectors to keep the linked system operating as designed. Reading Consumer Reports and looking at different government websites, you definitely want to have your detectors linked. So I decided to bite the bullet and replace all our smoke detector with the new Firex (which look identical to the old units). Kidde sells an inexpensive adapter so I could use the old Firex wiring with the new connector. Installation was simple and took about 5 minutes each. You don't have to buy the adapter, but without it you have to wire the new connectors into the existing wiring. I don't recommend doing this because the adapter is so much easier and quicker, particularly if your on a ladder in a room with 12 foot ceilings. The new Firex detectors have a10 year warranty versus a 5 year on the old units. I am glad I got these replaced. There is peace of mind knowing your system is going to work. I also like having the battery door on the outside, so you don,t need to take the unit down to replace the battery. You just slide the door open and switch batteries - very convenient.Since then, I've had to replace 4 of them due to false alarms - not low-battery chirps, but full-on alarms, triggering all of the other interconnected smoke detectors and the monitored alarm system. All but one was - of course - in the middle of the night, scaring the beejeebies out of my family, pets, and house guests. And yes, I do clean the dust out the detectors regularly. (This matters not to me, but another purchaser should know this up front. One other reviewer also recognized this.) The i4618A comes with a replacement three wire harness. The color coding is simple. Black is hot, White is neutral and red is the connection to other detectors. The mounting plate is a larger size that what I replaced. This would be helpful if the mounting location hole is a bit larger than you really wanted. Installation was simple and both units performed just as described in the user manual. It is comforting to know that smoke in one part of the house sets off the other detectors.One of which is replacing all of our fire alarms that were installed when the house was built about 14 years ago. (I think you're supposed to replace them every 10 years-ish). Well, the hubby said these would work, so I ordered them and he said they were a breeze to install. Only thing that works is to pull the batteries. What's the point of a battery backed up hard wired alarm if it's going to go off on every power failure. I can't have a safety device like this numbing my family to the dangers that it is supposed to be warning us of. If Kidde is going to sell a hard wired product then it needs to be able to handle power failures and the associated surges. This is absolutely ridiculous that I couldn't even make it 4 days on a 10 year alarm.Then it started to complain about low battery even though I replace it every year. The battery it was complaining about had been replaced only 4 months ago. The battery did measure very low on my battery tester. I took a new battery, tested it with the battery meter and put that in. Within a week or so, the low battery chirping started again. Again, this battery turned out to be completely drained. I checked the electrical wiring with a proper tester and also made sure the alarm indicated that it was getting power from the wired connection. I went through 2 more brand new batteries in about 10 more days before disconnecting this unit. So, in summary, the unit lasted barely 3 years. Given this performance, who knows if it would have behaved correctly in case of a real alarm situation.Since all these units trigger together and there is no indication as to which unit initiated the fault, the troubleshooting methodology is tedious. Getting tired of this. We're apparently gluttons for punishment as we're ordering two more Kidde KN-COPE-IC units today. I suppose the next step is to replace the entire system with a different brand.I finally identified the one blinking red as the false alarmer and pulled it from the ceiling and removed the battery and that finally stopped it. Against my better judgement with sunk cost factoring in, i ordered another replacement and hoped that would solve it. This morning (December 2) a new one upstairs has false alarmed instead after a few weeks of silence. THese units are complete S-H-you-know-what.
